There’s something nerve-racking about handing over your keys , especially when your car is more than just a ride; it’s a reflection of who you are. Most enthusiasts know that uneasy feeling: “Will they take care of it the way I do?”
That’s the question that led me to Pompeii Motorsports, a small but remarkably professional shop tucked in the Upstate , a place that’s quietly earning the community’s respect not through flash, but through integrity.
First Impressions: A Shop That Feels Different
The moment I walked in, I saw a Miata sitting on scales, an LS-swapped 2021 ND that immediately caught my attention.
Before I even hit record, they were teaching me about corner balancing, explaining how weight distribution and suspension geometry affect performance.
You could tell right away , this wasn’t a shop that rushed jobs. They studied them.
And it made me curious: who builds a culture like that?
The Origin of Pompeii Motorsports
Robert’s story is one of resilience and timing.
Before Pompeii, he worked as an auto-body technician, rebuilding salvage cars to I-CAR standards ,not quick flips, but full restorations.
Then, in the middle of COVID, opportunity struck.
That sense of timing , and faith in purpose, still drives the shop today.
Values Over Everything
When I asked him what values define his shop, Robert didn’t hesitate. He paused for a moment and added something that stuck with me: (Watch the video below)
That’s servant leadership in its truest form , and it shows.
The Team Behind the Torque
“It’s just me and Chad right now,” Robert explained. “He’s got experience in areas I don’t,
and that’s good — we balance each other. We both have that creative mindset. The limit is what you can imagine.”
Together, they’ve built a rhythm that works , equal parts craftsmanship, innovation, and humility.
Robert’s constantly experimenting with new tech: That’s a rare attitude these days, a willingness to learn before earning.
The Boss 302 story (in video)
Robert allowed the customer to stay in the shop, working side by side , unusual, but it paid off. Together, they recalibrated the pinion angle, centered the live axle using plumb bobs, and dialed in perfect thrust geometry.
That’s the difference between service and relationship.
What Selfvation Stands For Now
Hearing Robert speak reminded me why Selfvation exists.
We’re not chasing warehouses or subscriptions anymore.
We’re building something far more important — a network of real people and real stories that bring our community together.
Selfvation is here to shine a light on the local businesses that deserve your trust, the events that deserve your time, and the stories that remind you why you fell in love with cars in the first place.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about fame, clout, or clicks.
It’s about shaking hands, building relationships, and celebrating the people who still do things the right way.
