We all know who this is, and if you’re from the Upstate, chances are you’ve seen him tearing down the road or turning heads at a meet. Barry Michael’s turbocharged, LS-swapped Miata is no secret—but getting to know the man behind the build was even more exciting. Take a look into Barry’s journey: his inspiration, challenges, and the relentless passion that transformed his dream car into a true legend on the streets.

Introducing Barry Michael’s Build: Part 1

Before the turbo was installed, we captured an earlier stage of Barry’s LS-swapped Miata build. This Part 1 video offers a great introduction to Barry and his project, showcasing the foundation of what has since evolved into one of the most eye-catching cars on the scene. Stay tuned for an up-close look at Barry’s creativity and determination as he built up the Miata, setting the stage for the turbocharged powerhouse it is today.

Inspiration and Motivation

What inspired you to undertake the LS swap and subsequent turbocharging of your Miata?

Barry: “I saw a video of an LS-swapped Miata when I was a teenager, and it became a dream of mine ever since. The turbo? That was more of a snowball effect that just kept building as I went.”

How did your passion for automotive modifications develop over time?

Barry: “It really came down to wanting to go fast and learning through hands-on experience along the way.”

Project Planning and Execution

Could you outline the planning process for this project? What research and preparations were involved?

Barry: “Honestly, it was more of a spaghetti system. I’d try things within my budget and see what worked. It was a mix of trial, error, and improvisation.”

What were the most significant challenges you faced during the swap and turbo installation?

Barry: “The biggest challenge was making everything fit and still keeping the setup looking clean.”

Technical Specifications and Modifications

Can you provide detailed specifications of the LS engine and turbo setup used in your Miata?

Barry: “Sure, it’s an LC9 5.3 with a forged bottom end, Sloppy Stage 3 cam, PAC springs, LS7 lifters, Trick Flow pushrods, BTR trunnion upgrade, and ARP 2000 head studs. The turbo is a VS Racing 78/75. And that’s just part of the list!”

What modifications were necessary to accommodate the new engine and turbo system?

Barry: “Lots of cutting and welding. I fabricated everything from scratch myself.”

Performance Metrics

What are the current horsepower and torque figures of your Miata post-modifications?

Barry: “It’s sitting at approximately 850 hp and 850 torque.”

How have these enhancements impacted the vehicle’s handling and overall driving dynamics?

Barry: “Even with all the power, it still handles like a Miata.”

Cost and Time Investment

Could you share the total cost incurred for the LS swap and turbocharging process?

Barry: “Altogether, it’s been about $30,000.”

How long did the entire project take from inception to completion?

Barry: “It’s never truly finished, but it’s been about three years and counting.”

Learning and Development

What new skills or knowledge did you acquire throughout this project?

Barry: “Almost everything I know now came from this project—fabrication, general swap knowledge, and a lot of details that go into these types of builds.”

Were there any unexpected obstacles, and how did you overcome them?

Barry: “Too many to list. It was all trial and error, breaking things and figuring out what could be done better.”

Community and Support

Did you collaborate with any automotive communities or forums during this build?

Barry: “Yes, I was involved with groups like Sloppy Mechanics, V8 Miatas, and some other random Facebook groups.”

How has the response been from your audience and fellow enthusiasts regarding this project?

Barry: “The support has been overwhelming, especially from local car enthusiasts. I never expected my car to gain this much attention.”

How do you approach documenting and sharing your automotive projects on your YouTube channel?

Barry: “I keep it as organic and honest as possible. It’s for informational and entertainment purposes only.”

What strategies have you found effective in engaging your audience and growing your channel?

Barry: “Honestly, it’s a roll of the dice. YouTube can gatekeep, so it’s a tough platform to navigate.”
