3 Garage Stories Blowing Up This Week: Greenville SC to Miami
Forget the algorithm for a minute. This week the posts pulling real numbers weren't giveaways or drama — they were garage stories. A Greenville guy trying to rebuild old-school wrench culture in his own driveway. A Nissan that started as a rolling shell and became somebody's whole personality. And a former F1 driver, elbows-deep in a 40-year-old BMW in a Miami workshop. Three stories, three builds, one thing in common: nobody built any of this alone.
A Greenville Man Is Rebuilding the Old-School Garage — And the Upstate Showed Up
Julez Knight is tired of watching project cars rot in driveways. On September 11 he posted an invitation to form a hands-on car-builder group for Greenville, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn — not a show crew, not a race team. A group for actual wrenching: garage days, shared tools, shared knowledge, cruise-ins and shows on the side. His own project is a dusty teal 1985 Camaro Z28 with a 383 stroker mid-rebuild, and he was upfront about the terms: this isn't about free labor. It's about the old-school garage atmosphere, where you learn by handing somebody a wrench.
The response was the whole story. Nearly 400 comments from Greenville, Greer, Mauldin, Gaffney, Woodruff, Easley, Piedmont, and Taylors. People listing their builds — classic Camaros, Cutlasses, Chevelles, Corvettes, modern trucks, Jeeps, imports. Painters offering paint booths, detailers offering details, folks with no project at all just saying they want to learn. Dozens of people asking to be added to the group.
This is what car culture actually looks like when nobody's filming for content. One person says "my garage is open," and thirty people say "what do you need?" If Julez is in your part of the Upstate, this is the crew worth finding.

"A Box of Rocks" Two Years Ago. Now Look at It.
Builder Joey Maxx posted one line with his transformation reel: "It's crazy to think this car was a box of rocks 2 years ago." 22,000+ likes later, it's one of the most-shared build videos of the week. The before footage tells the whole story — a primer-white 240SX shell in a garage, no front bumper, no headlights, roll cage already in. Just a starting point and a plan.
The after: a metallic green 240SX with a widebody kit, aggressive front bumper, black carbon-fiber hood, big aftermarket wheels, and a full cage inside. It's not a trailer queen either — the build has drift in its blood, and it looks like a car that gets driven.
The takeaway isn't "buy a 240SX." It's that two years of steady work beats two years of waiting for the perfect starting point. Most builds die in month three because the shell still looks like a shell. Joey's didn't. Document yours, post the ugly middle, and keep going — the internet will find you when the paint goes on.

An Ex-F1 Driver Is Turbocharging a Classic BMW. In a Workshop. Like the Rest of Us.
Former Formula 1 driver Dani Clos has raced at the highest level on earth — and right now he's documenting a turbo widebody build on a classic BMW E24 coupe in a Miami workshop, one greasy step at a time. His September 19 post, "Proyecto BMW E24 TURBO WideBody in process," pulled 12,000+ likes and a comment section full of people just begging him to share it: finish the thing, we need to see it done.
The photos are pure garage truth. Hood off. Wiring everywhere. A turbocharger going where BMW never intended one. Orange wheels waiting their turn, boxes of Vibrant Performance parts stacked in front of the car, a Mishimoto intercooler getting test-fitted. Brands like Garrett Motion, K-Tuned, and Radium Engineering in the tags — the real parts list of a real build, not a showroom spec sheet.
There's something grounding about it. A guy with a million followers and an F1 résumé still gets the same itch the rest of us get: take a car you love, take it apart, make it better than it was. The resume doesn't matter. The build does.

This is bigger than cars Selfvation exists for one reason: nobody should have to love car culture alone. Every meet, every spotlight, every build we share is pulling toward something real — our own indoor home for this community. A warehouse where the family gathers rain or shine, where kids are welcome, where nobody gets judged for what they drive.
We're not there yet. But every follower, every subscriber gets us closer. If this is your world too, you're already one of us.
